Teamlab | Impermanente – Flores Flutuando em um Mar Infinito

Farol Santander, São Paulo, SP

2023

Executive Production

teamLab has been exploring how human beings understand the world, its perceived limits, and the perception of continuity itself.

This exhibition includes artworks based on teamLab’s concept of Ultrasubjective Space. When the world is cut off by lenses or perspective in a moving image, the space in that image seems to exist on the other side of the screen, and the screen becomes a boundary. When our point of view is fixed, we lose track of our body and, as our perception is reduced to focus on a single point, we are easily placed in a hypnotic state in which intention and critical thinking are lost.

The screens of the works based on Ultrasubjective Space do not become a limit, blurring the boundaries between the viewer’s space and the work of art. As the viewpoint can move, we can walk freely while looking at the image and, by not creating a focus, it becomes possible to expand the perspective infinitely. The eye is not guided anywhere, which allows us to look at the image with freedom of intention.

The flowers in this exhibition perpetually repeat the cycle of life and death, blooming and dispersing under the influence of visitors and spreading under the influence of visitors. By making people part of the artwork, the boundaries between the world of the artwork and that of the viewer are blurred. In Continuous Life and Death at the Now of Eternity, the flowers change daily along with the seasons in real time. The world of the artwork gets lighter and darker along with the sunset and the sunrise of São Paulo.

We hoped that visitors would experience the space and time created by artworks that are continuous with the body without limits, actively perceiving the world through their whole body.
